What are essential oils?
Have you ever rubbed a mint or basil leaf between your fingers?  Your fingers smell of the plant afterwards. That is the essential oil! Essential oil is the “lifeblood” of a plant because the oil protects the plant from disease, provides nutrients and helps to fight off anything it doesn’t want. It keeps the plant healthy and functioning at its best! The oils come from roots, seeds, shrubs, flowers, leaves and trees and are able to promote health and wellness to the body. The chemistry of essential oils is complex and consists of hundreds of different and unique chemical compounds – this is what gives each oil its unique attributes and characteristics.

The history of essential oils is the root of our wellness and original means of health and medicine. (In fact, they’re mentioned several times throughout the Bible!) Essential oils (EO) are able to reach every part of our body on the cellular level, which is a bit mindblowing. The aromatic abilities of EO work in the limbic system in the brain where emotions are stored. EO can have some seriously incredible physiological and psychological effects. They can even help you relax and release emotional trauma. Because nobody wants to keep trauma around.

Seriously, friends… they are impressive little blessings in bottles!

How do I use essential oils?
You can access the power of essential oils many ways, but the most common practices include aromatic diffusion, topical application, and dietary consumption. These methods bring the pure essence of health-promoting botanicals to your home, family, and life.

 Using your oils topically:
Direct application onto the skin is one of the easiest ways to use essential oils. It is also a highly effective method since essential oils can easily pass through the lipid membranes of cell walls. They are able to penetrate cells and disperse throughout the body within minutes. The bottom of the feet is a good place to apply oils directly because many nerve endings are found there and the pores of the skin are large in that area.

* Fun fact: You can put a drop of lavender oil on your big toe at night to help promote a deeper sleep!

Before you start, remember to test a small area of the skin first. Apply one oil or blend at a time. When layering oils that are new to you, allow 15-30 minutes between each oil to give the body a chance to respond before applying a second oil.

The longer essential oils stay in contact with the skin, the more likely they are to be absorbed. To reduce evaporation and enhance penetration, putting socks on after applying can help.

 Carrier oils:
Two main reasons I use carrier oils are:
1. they help the essential oil absorb better into the skin and get to where they need to go faster and more effectively
2. a very small amount of essential oils is enough for each use, carrier oils help applying the essential oils much more effectively. A good side effect is that this way your essential oils will last much longer too.

You can pre-dilute your oils with a carrier oil and store in a glass roller bottle for fast and easy application. I do this with multiple oils – Thieves in an immunity roller, for example. Makes application quick and less messy than diluting every time I use it.

* Side Note: When you see someone say they are using something “neat” it means that they are using the essential oil non-diluted, directly on the skin. Either of these ways are perfectly effective! When it comes to children under 6, always dilute to be safe and until you know how they’ll respond. When using EO’s on a large area of your body (back massage anyone?) a carrier oil can help distribute over that large area without wasting essential oil. Diluting is also helpful for hot oils such as Thieves, Peppermint, and Oregano, which can irritate the skin or have a “burning” sensation when undiluted.

 Using your oils aromatically:
Diffusing essential oils is a perfect way to improve your home, work, or living environment. This is one of my favorite uses of my oil collection! Diffusing can purify the air and neutralize mildew, cigarette smoke or other odors as well as protect you and your family from harmful things we breathe in the air. Diffusing can also help with mood regulation.

For other ways to inhale essential oils, you can try the following:
– Place 2 drops into the palm of your hand; rub clockwise with the other hand. Cup hands together over the nose and mouth and inhale deeply.
– Add several drops of an essential oil to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water. Inhale the vapors that rise from the bowl. A towel can be placed over the head and bowl to increase the intensity of the vapors.
– Apply a few drops of essential oil to a cotton ball, tissue, natural-fiber handkerchief, or clay necklace and inhale periodically.

 Using your oils for dietary/internally:
It may seem like a new idea to ingest essential oils but in fact there are thousands of food products that currently use essential oils for aroma and flavor, such as: chewing gum, chocolates, candies, etc. In fact, the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) classifies certain essential oils as GRAS (generally recognized as safe)!

Looking to add variety and flavor to your cooking? Make room for essential oils in your spice cabinet! Their rich, bright aromas can add a delicious kick of flavor to your favorite recipes. Try adding a drop or two of lime to fresh salsa or to your favorite Mexican-inspired marinade, lemon to grilled fish, peppermint to hot cocoa, or basil and oregano to homemade pasta sauce. Get creative and enjoy all the culinary possibilities of essential oils.

While certain essential oils should not be taken in large amounts at one time, moderate use as flavoring (a few drops per person) is not only safe but delicious!

– Peppermint
– Basil
– Lemon
– Nutmeg
– Thieves (this will now always be found in my coffee!)

Are essential oils safe to use?

How long do essential oils last?
Young Living oils do not expire when stored properly. True essential oils never expire, synthetics do. You will find that other essential oil companies have expiration dates on their bottles.

What is a carrier oil, what does it do, and why should I use it?
A carrier oil is a vegetable oil (such as coconut oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil) that can be used to dilute essential oils. Carrier oils ensure that essential oils applied topically are comfortable to the skin. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the essential oil. In fact, it prevents waste due to excessive application. Look for dilution ratios on Young Living essential oil bottles.
